Ms Jacinta Mutwiwa, Tutorial fellow at Department of Mathematics has secured a competitive research fellowship at the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis for Africa (CEMA). Mutwiwa overcome at least 650 applicants to sail through a rigorous selection process that sees the young scholar merge brains with few other counterparts to contribute to empirical solutions in solving Epidemiological problems in Africa and beyond. The candidate will receive mentorship from faculty and researchers from the University of Nairobi, the University of Cambridge, and other institutions depending on subject area and needs. She will also be sponsored for an intensive two-week short course in mathematical modelling which will be offered using the open-source programming language of R, adapted from the Well-established Mathematical Models for Infectious Disease Dynamics’ Course.
The Center for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) is a multidisciplinary center at the University of Nairobi whose goal is to support the control, elimination, and eradication of infectious diseases through data-driven decision making processes that improve health in Kenya and Africa. In the recent past, Department of Mathematics has successfully mentored top brains in Science including Yvonne Kariuki who recently won the prestigious DAAD scholarship towards Doctor of Philosophy in Pure Mathematics.
